Partnerships

Partnerships Manager

Job role: Management And Executive

Describe what you do in your job. What is a typical day like?

My job has a lot of variety. As well as generating new business by finding new sponsors – I also have to ensure all existing accounts & relationships we have are managed appropriately. Due to the scope of what our contracts can include, my day to day is never the same – with constant work being done on two fronts – delivery/activation & sales.

Was this your first job? What other jobs or work experience have you had?

No – my first job was working at a rugby club – in both development and coaching.

What process did you have to follow to get your job?

I always had a passion for sport growing up, and found myself managing this at university by taking up voluntary roles. The more I found myself learning and taking part in sports management, the more I realised I wanted to pursue a career in the industry. I looked for various roles in sport upon leaving university and eventually found a pathway I was comfortable in – and that was working in professional football.

What is great about your job? What part of your job do you enjoy the most?

To football fans – I may have one of the best jobs in the world. As well as generating new business which can be difficult at times – we need to make sure we maintain strong relationships and provide money can’t buy experiences. These experiences involve meeting players, watching training, and getting to see and interact with things that most fans would only dream of. For a sports business fanatic, I get exposed to a lot of the other areas of the business. Partnerships isn’t just one product and includes a whole host of different areas – as a result my work is relatively varied – which is something I love.

What training do you get at work to help you do your job role?

I must confess training has been minimal but that’s more because I’ve been so busy I haven’t found the time to take part in this. Although I’m sure there may well be courses on how to be more creative, and how to manage relationships – I think there is more value in sales training in a role like my own. The other parts tends to be an innate skill.

What skills are required to do your job?

In terms of personality traits – you will certainly need charisma, tenacity, a high work rate and a very good grasp on organisational skills. You’ll also need to be very open to new ways of thinking and ideas as the advertising/marketing industry continuously evolves. Good skills that I think are pre-requisites include sales, sales in the advertising industry, account management.

What role-specific qualifications do you think are needed to do your job?

No – but a good grasp on business and/or marketing would certainly be useful.

What was the highest level of qualification you needed from school, college or university to do your role?

  • Level 3 - GCSE grades A*-C (Level 4-9); Btec First Diploma, Certificate, Award; NVQ 2; Intermediate 2 Credit Standard Grade; SVQ 2.
  • Level 6 - Degree BA (Hons), Bsc (Hons); Degree (Top-up); NVQ 6; Bachelors / Masters Ordinary Degrees; Graduate Diplomas / Certificates; Bachelors / Masters Degrees (Honours); SVQ 4.
